Lance Corporal Alfred John (Jack) Brunsdon

 

Alfred John (Jack) Brunsdon (or Brunsden) was born on 21 December 1896 at Bangor Coastguard Station, the last of six children of English-born coast guard officer John James Brunsdon and his Donegal-born wife Elizabeth (nee Wright).

By 1911 he was living with his family at Lothair Avenue, Belfast.

Brunsdon enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 25 August 1914 (No.1040 - later Corps of Hussars No.71209), probably overstating his age by a year.

He embarked for France on 1 May 1915 with D Squadron.

On 21 January 1919 he was discharged as 'surplus to military requirements (not having suffered impairment since entry into the service)' – para 392xxv(a) King's Regulations.

After the war Brunsdon returned to Lothair Avenue and worked as an engineer. In November 1924 he emigrated to the United States.

 

Brunsdon's two older brothers, Albert and Sydney, also served in the North Irish Horse and survived the war.
